Freeman Blazes Final 2 Rounds To Win 2nd- Career Carolinas Open

Daryl Freeman

29 April 2012 - White Lake, N.C.  -  Hall-of-Fame legend Daryl Freeman shot 44 the final two rounds to catch and pass the leader all day, Tidewater resident Thomas Rawles, and win his second-career Carolinas Open title. Freeman becomes the 6th player in the 28-year history of the event to win multiple Carolinas Open titles, joining Greg Ward, Todd Barfield, Greg Newport, Vince Batten and Randy Reeves.

Cloudy skies and cool temperatures greeted the field of 33 pros and 24 amateurs. On a day that players would have to battle constantly-changing course conditions, scores started very low as Rawles and 2009 Virginia Open Champion Bill Baus opened with matching 21s. Right behind at 23 were 2007 Northern Open Champion Rick Culverhouse and 2-time winner in 2012 Matt McCaslin. Rawles continued his hot start and opened a 4-shot lead at the halfway point with a two-round score of 45. McCaslin and defending Carolinas Open Champion Darrell Britt were tied for second at 49, while 5 players were sitting at 50 that included Ward, Culverhouse, resurgent Danny McCaslin, 2011 Western Open Champion Frank Warren, and winner of the previous days event Kevin Rutledge.

In the third round, clouds gave way to sunshine and temperatures soared. With the temperatures the scores also went up. Rawles began to struggle but held on to the lead after a third-round 27 put him in at 72. Danny McCaslin shot 23 to move to second at 73, while Freeman used a 22 to tie Rutledge for third at 74 with Britt and Warren tied for fifth at 75.

Freeman continued to keep his putter as hot as the rising temperatures as he shot his second consecutive 22 to post a final score of 96. That gave Freeman a 5-shot win over 2005 PPA National Champion Jay Klapper, who quietly shot 47 his final two rounds to post a 101 and a second place finish. Rawles limped to the finish with a 30 the final round to post a 102 and a third place tie with Danny McCaslin, Rutledge, 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo, 2007 Elton Davis Memorial Champion Tony Jackson, and 2010 SPT Champion Michael Hitt. The cash line for the pros fell at 106

David Myers

The amateur division started with a record performance. Donnie Carpenter, who returned to action this weekend for the first time in many years, brought back memories of past great performances when he was a dominant APA player by tying the course record with a 20. That gave Carpenter a 3-shot cushion over 2011 APA Southern Open Champion Billy Caudle and 4 shots over defending APA Carolinas Open Champion David Myers. Myers went back to the top at the halfway point at 49, with Carpenter and 2011 APA Eastern Open Champion Chris Chafin at 50.

Carpenter and Chafin matched 26s in the third round to tie at the top at 76 with Myers right behind at 77. Myers brought back memories of his win last season by firing a 25 the final round and taking his second consecutive APA Carolinas Open title with a score of 102. Sneaking into second place was 2009 APA Georgia State Champion Todd Trent at 105, with Chafin and 2008 APA Southern Open Champion Larry Hoover tied for third at 106. The cash line for the amateur division fell at 113.

The SPT would like to extend a big thank you to John and Jill Womble and staff at Goldston Beach for another fabulous weekend at their facility. The SPT will host the Southern Open in High Point the weekend of June 2nd and 3rd, with the first 3 rounds starting at 11am Saturday, June 2nd, and the final 3 rounds on Sunday, June 3rd, starting at 9am. The next SPT regular events will be in Martinsville, VA, on June 23rd and 24th. These events will be combined with the Virginia Tour, with Virginia running the tournaments and using their entry fees and payouts.
