Did You Hear About Danny McCaslin Firing 68 En Route To Victory in Richmond, VA?

Danny McCaslin

21 July  2012 - Richmond, V.A.  - Course manager, host professional, and PPA Hall of Fame member Gary Hinshaw welcomed the Virginia PPA Tour to the beautiful Richmond, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center for the first of three weekend tournaments on course # 2, on which the 2012 PPA Eastern Open will be contested on the weekend of August 11-12.  Overnight rainfall and a brief but heavy shower an hour prior to tee-off led to favorable scoring conditions, of which many in the field of 22 professionals and 14 amateurs took advantage.  Reigning PPA Southern Open Champion Danny McCaslin soared to the top an otherwise tightly-bunched leaderboard to notch a dominant victory.

After an opening-round 24, McCaslin stood in a two-way tie for fourth place, trailing first-round tri-leaders 2010 PPA National Champion Greg Newport, 1991 VA State Champion Ed Grajewski, and 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo by one stroke.  With a middle-round 22, however, McCaslin established the 36-hold lead at 46, two strokes better than Newport, naturally-gifted 1997 PPA National Champion Randy Reeves, 1991 VA State Champion Ed Grajewski, and 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson.  McCaslin cruised to his second victory of a stellar 2012 PPA campaign by recording a second-consecutive 22 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 68.  Former VA Open Champion Terry Phillips, who recently returned to PPA action following a lengthy hiatus, matched McCaslin's third-round 22 to earn runner-up honors at 71.  At 72, Newport finished third.  A three-way, fourth-place tie at 73 included Reeves, Grajewski, and Johnson.  Two-time PPA National Doubles Champion Rick Rybaczek posted the low round of the tournament with a closing-round 21.  The last of the twelve money spots awarded in the professional division fell at a three-round score of 77.

Chris Chafin

In the amateur division, 2011 Tournament Players Championship APA Champion Dr. Chris Chafin used an opening-round 23, the low round of the tournament in the amateur division, as a springboard to a hard-fought yet wire-to-wire triumph, his sixth of the 2012 season.  After taking the lead with his first-round 23, Chafin shot 26 in the middle round to fall into a three-way first-place tie at 49 with 2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie and two-time VA APA State Champion Malcolm Shumaker.  But with a solid final-round 24, Chafin completed the event alone atop the amateur leaderboard with a 54-hole score of 73.  Petrie and Shumaker tied for second place at 75.  A three-way, fourth-place logjam at 78 included two-time APA National Champion Clayton Craft, Esq., rapidly-playing 1993 North Carolina APA State Champion Keith Waters, and former Richmond, VA resident Scott Anderson.  The final APA expense reimbursement spot allocated in the tournament came at a three-round total of 79.

The Virginia Tour will return to action with a 54-hole event to be held on course # 2 at the Richmond, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012.
