Rick Shelton Fires 66 To Edge Out Greg Newport By One Stroke In Richmond, VA

Rick Shelton

21 July 2012 - Richmond, VA - The Virginia Tour held the second of three weekend 54-hole events at the sprawling Richmond, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center.  1987 PPA television series contestant and Richmond, VA resident Rick Shelton, who recently had returned to PPA action after a lengthy hiatus from the sport, capitalized on his extensive local knowledge of and experience on Richmond's course # 2 layout, as he fired a spectacular three-round total of 66 to hold off charging 2010 PPA National Champion Greg Newport and earn his first victory of the 2012 season.

Shelton's march to glory began with an opening-round 22, which gave him a slim one-stroke advantage over 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson.  With a middle-round 21, Shelton extended his lead after two rounds to three strokes with a 36-hole total of 43.  Newport, Johnson, and two-time PPA National Doubles Champion Rick Rybaczek hovered in a second-place tie at 46.  Newport and Rybaczek each matched Shelton's second-round 21 to tie Shelton for low-round honors for the event.  Shelton finished off his wire-to-wire triumph with a third-round 23 for a 54-hole total of 66.  Newport's inspired clubhouse run fell a stroke short of success, as he posted his second-consecutive 21 in the closing round but settled for a second-place finish at 67.  At 70, Johnson and always-dangerous James White tied for third position.  2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird rounded out the tournament's top five finishers at 71.  The last of the eleven money spots awarded in the event came at a three-round score of 75.

Mike Matthews

In a closely-fought amateur division battle, 2008 APA National Doubles Champion Mike Matthews seized a one-stroke 54-hole lead at 49 with opening rounds of 24 and 25.  Mired in a fifth-place tie at 52 after posting a pair of 26's, Donnie L. Carpenter, winner of numerous National Tour major APA titles in the 1990's, manufactured a timely final-round 22 to tie Matthews, who shot a third-round 24, atop the final APA leaderboard at 74.  A tournament victor would be determined in an 18-hole playoff.  At 76, first-round leader Clayton Craft, Esq. and 2010 APA National Champion Joey Graybeal shared third place.  2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie pole-vaulted into fifth position at 77 by virtue of a tournament-low closing round of 21,  which was nearly as perfect as his S.A.T. verbal score.  The final of the seven amateur division expense reimbursement spots allocated in the event fell at a 54-hole score of 78.

The ensuing amateur division playoff began on the inward nine due to an unanticipated inundation of the course's opening holes with customers following the conclusion of regulation play.  Matthews opened up a two-stroke lead over Carpenter after the initial nine holes of the playoff, acing all but hole 15 on the back nine to shoot 10.  After the playoff contestants matched cards on the first four holes of the front nine, disaster struck for Carpenter at the treacherous fifth hole.  Carpenter's bogey there gave Matthews a three-stroke advantage with four holes remaining.  Carpenter regrouped to ace the next three holes and pull within one stroke of Matthews with one hole remaining.  With honors, however, Carpenter deuced the ninth hole.  Matthews subsequent deuce gave him a one-stroke playoff triumph by a final tally of 25-26.  The win was the second of the 2012 season for Matthews.

The Virginia Tour schedule will continue with a 54-hole tournament to be contested on course # 2 at the Richmond, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
