Robert Johnson Wins Three-Way Playoff In Roanoke, VA

Robert Johnson

09 June 2012 - Roanoke, VA - On a sunny and hot late spring morning, the Virginia PPA Tour gathered on course # 2 at the beautiful Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center to contest the first of three weekend tour events.  The day's baking sunshine caused the course's mercurial backwards carpet fibers to rise to attention during the 54-hole tournament, leading to a wide range of field scoring in both the professional and amateur divisions.

After posting opening rounds of 26 and 25, 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson stood mired in a tie for fifth place, three strokes behind second-round leader Greg Newport.  With a sizzling final-round 24, however, Johnson forced a three-way playoff with Newport and 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird, as the trio completed regulation play deadlocked at a 54-hole total of 75.  In the ensuing 18-hole playoff, Johnson trailed both Newport and Baird at the completion of the outward nine.  But with aces on each of the final four holes of the playoff, Johnson overtook Newport and Baird to earn a hard-fought victory, his fourth of the 2012 PPA season.

2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo and 1991 VA State Champion Ed Grajewski tied for fourth place at 76.  Newport notched low round honors for the tournament in the professional division with a middle-round 22.  The final of the eleven money spots awarded in the event fell at a three-round score of 82.

Clayton Craft

In the amateur division, two-time APA National Champion and Roanoke, VA local standout Clayton Craft, Esq. took full advantage of his virtually limitless local course knowledge and experience to capture his first triumph of the 2012 season.  Trailing second-round leader Joey Graybeal by one stroke after rounds of 27 and 25, Craft crafted a sensational final-round 24 to cruise to a five-shot triumph with a 54-hole total of 76.  Graybeal settled for a share of runner-up honors with 2003 APA National Champion Bonnie White at 81.  A two-way, fourth-place tie at 82 included Roanoke local player Troy Sarver and 2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie.  Craft, Graybeal, and Petrie tied for the low round in the amateur division with 24.  The last of the nine amateur division expense reimbursement spots distributed in the tournament came at a 54-hole total of 85.

The Virginia Tour will return to action with another 54-hole event on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2012.
