Jeff Spainhour Fires 73 to Dominate Field in Roanoke, VA

Jeff Spainhour

09 June 2012 - Roanoke, VA - The Virginia Tour held the second of three weekend tour events on course # 2 at the immaculately-maintained Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center.  As in the day's earlier event, the intense heat and sunshine of the afternoon caused the course's enigmatic carpet fibers to fluff significantly, contributing to a disparity of field scoring in both the professional and amateur divisions.

After a lackluster performance in the day's earlier tournament, Jeff Spainhour reignited his stellar 2012 Virginia Tour campaign.  With steady, solid rounds of 23, 25, and 25 for a 54-hole score of 73, Spainhour captured his second tour title of the season by four strokes.  Defending champion Robert Johnson, recently-crowned PPA Southern Open Champion Danny McCaslin, and two-time PPA National Doubles Champion Rick Rybaczek shared runner-up honors at 77.  2010 PPA National Champion Greg Newport pole-vaulted into fifth place by virtue of carding a spectacular tournament-low closing-round 21.  The last of the eleven cash spots distributed in the tournament came at a three-round score of 83.

Clayton Craft

In the amateur division, defending champion Clayton Craft, Esq. of Roanoke used a brilliant tournament-low second-round 21 as a springboard to his second-consecutive victory.  With rounds of 26, 21, and 28 for a 54-hole total of 75, Craft earned his second triumph of the 2012 season by four strokes.  The win also marked a milestone for Craft, as it was his 40th-career amateur division victory.  At 79, first-round leader Bill Petrie and defending champion Malcolm Shumaker shared runner-up honors.  Three-time VA APA State Champion Conway Coffey brewed up an 80 to finish alone in fourth position.  2010 APA National Champion Joey Graybeal, 2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie, Roanoke local player James LeBrun, and 2008 APA National Doubles Champion Mike Matthews tied for fifth place at 81 and garnered the final amateur division expense reimbursement spots allocated in the tournament.

The Virginia Tour will resume play with the contesting of the tour's third major championship of the 2012 season, the 72-hole Virginia Putting Classic, on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center.  That event will commence at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
